My 60 years in music...

Classical Guitarist, Dana Chivers, in a varied and productive career spanning over sixty years has played hundreds of solo recitals, chamber music concerts, recorded over 100 tracks and performed live on national media in France, Belgium, the U.K,  Scandinavia and the U.S.  His latest recordings, a selection of the late Gilbert Biberian’s preludes, have earned him critical acclaim.

Inspired by his first chamber music activities in Paris and following the generous support of the Pleiades Trust in London, Chivers re-discovered several manuscripts by 19th century Viennese composer W. Matiegka that he recorded with friends and some of London's most renowned chamber players .  “Masterpieces for Guitar” also on the Pleiades label, reveals his subtlety in tone colour and phrasing.  Scheduled for release in 2024 is a new cd of Spanish works by Albeniz, Llobet, and others.

Following studies in Spain with José Tomas, attending masterclasses with Andrés Segovia in Santiago de Compostela and a short stint with Oscar Ghiglia, Chivers moved away from guitar circles to study theory and interpretation under Nadia Boulanger in Paris.

In 1967, while already pursuing an active European concert career,  his refusal to participate in the Vietnam war  forced him to rethink his long term plans and he settled in France. A decade of intense activity with the great Russia/American violinist, Myriam Solovieff, led Chivers to work with some of France’s finest musicians such as Bruno Pasquier, Kathy Chastain and the Quatuor Bèrnede. Noteworthy also, were the 5 Impromptus written for him by Piotr Moss that he premiered in his London debut at the South Bank in 1985.  With his son, the violinist, composer and producer of Aéronèf,  David,  he toured extensively for over ten years and recorded three cds.

Works in preparation now includes further recordings of the corpus of works that have been dedicated to Mr. Chivers over the years and setting up online venues where he will be able to impart the knowledge that his extensive experience and extraordinary teachers have given him.

Dana lives with his wife of nearly 50 years, Raphaëlle, engineer and award winning designer of modern jewellery, in their ancestral home near Aix en Provence.
